Dental Crowns in Chicago, Evanston, Skokie

Dental crowns are a popular solution for teeth that are cracked, chipped, decayed, misaligned or simply unattractive. All flaws disappear under the crown, a strong protective cover which is bonded to the existing tooth to improve appearance and preserve function.

The crown can stabilize a weak tooth, mask discoloration and flaws, and even be used to anchor a dental bridge. The crown protects the health and integrity of the tooth within, while adding beauty to your smile.

Porcelain Crowns

Depending on the condition of the tooth, the experienced restorative dentists in Chicago, IL of Contos Smile Center may recommend a porcelain crown as the option that provides the most natural-looking new surface. The porcelain-fused-to-metal variety provides additional strength, but may create a dark line at the gum line. Crowns can be used for both cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry purposes.

Ceramic Crowns

Ceramic crowns are a common choice for front teeth, while resin crowns tend to be less expensive but also wear down more quickly. Metal crowns have the advantage of putting less stress on opposing teeth and are unlikely to crack.

Key Benefits of Dental Crowns

  • Replaces missing teeth
  • Offers support to misshapen teeth or badly broken teeth
  • Looks completely natural
  • Fixes “smile” and functional chewing problems

How the Dental Crown Process Works

To crown your tooth with a finely proportioned new surface requires two to three visits. Your first appointment with our Chicago dentist is devoted to an exam, X-rays and preparing the tooth to accommodate the permanent crown, which will be custom-made at a dental lab using impressions of the target tooth, as well as surrounding teeth (to ensure the crown does not alter your bite). You will be given local anesthetic as your dentist reshapes the existing tooth to allow for a secure fit when the permanent crown is bonded to it.

You will be sent home with an acrylic temporary crown as you wait for the permanent one to be created at the lab. In two to three weeks you’ll return to our office for the crowning ceremony — under local anesthetic, the temporary crown will be removed and the new one cemented into place.

Crowns Combined with Bridges

In the case of one or more missing teeth, your dentist in Chicago, IL may advise the use of a dental bridge, which can be held in place by either two adjacent crowns on natural teeth, or anchored to dental implants.

Options include conventional fixed, cantilever or resin-bonded bridges. With cantilever and conventional bridges, adjacent teeth require reshaping to accommodate the crowns that will be necessary to secure a bridge. Resin-bonded bridges are often appropriate for missing front teeth, and do not require extensive reshaping of surrounding teeth. Bridges are available in a wide range of material choices, including porcelain and metal, various resilient composites, alumina and even Zirconia, which, not surprisingly, provides diamond-like strength.

After-Care and Dental Crown Recovery

To keep your temporaries in place, avoid eating sticky foods (gum), hard foods, and if possible, chew on the opposite side of your mouth. It is important to brush normally, but floss carefully and don’t pull up on the floss which may dislodge the temporary but pull the floss out from the side of the temporary crown.

It is normal to experience some temperature and pressure sensitivity after each appointment. The sensitivity should subside a few weeks after the placement of the final restoration. Mild pain medications may also be used as directed by our office.
